Mmm. Pizza.
Yea. Art.
I love both, and I’d like to thank manager Evan Fetras and the staff at Flatbread Somerville in Davis Square for bringing together the best of both worlds by hosting our recent Nave fundraiser; many more thanks to Resa Blatman and Joe Keinberger for designing and producing our banner for the event. But most of all, I wanted to give a shout out to all of our friends and neighbors who came out in support of us and all that we do.
For those of you who want the details, we raised enough to pay the rent at the Nave Gallery Annex for another month. Maybe that doesn’t seem like a lot to you, but to us it is vital. Being located in the center of Davis Square has helped us not only present art in one the ‘Ville’s hubs, but it has also helped to draw attention and audience to our many other programs: art and music at the Nave mothership outside Teele Square (check out the new exhibition “You Are Here” which features the work of 33 artists); the Phone Art Box Project (a collaboration with the Somerville Arts Council) where artist Gary Duehr debuted his installation “Fossil Phone” this week on a previously abandoned phone box outside the Holland Street T station; Wrap Around, which under the leadership of Margaret Ryan and Tori Costa, has yarnstormed three locations in the city while hosting frequent meetups for knitters and crocheters to work on items for our November with proceeds benefiting our friends at the Somerville Homeless Coalition; and, I could go on.
In the Nave Annex alone since we opened on January 25th, we have hosted the following exhibitions: PICNIC, Black Ink, Memory Palace, the Knit Art House in Crochetville, Young New England Photographers Group Exhibition, The Body in Lines, Phantomaton and, Entering Somerville, our first Somerville-specific show which opens August 9th.
If we include all the folks who helped yarnstorm the space in May, we have shown the work of 122 artists, and well over 200 pieces of art–just in our Davis Square location alone. These artists include: Michael Ahern, Natalie Andrew, Samuray Akarvardar, Torey Akers, Paul Arsenault, Erica Aubin, Hillary Babick, Joshua Baptista, Christina Balch, Heather Balchunas, Laura Baldwin, Willa Bandler, Dagan Barrett, Cat Bartash, Caitlin Bechtel, Resa Blatman, Angela Bourda, Sarah Meyers Brent, Louise Briggett, Carlie Bristow, Nancy Brooks, Kelly Burgess, David C. We also hosted three exhibitions (Delicious Torment, Salon 21 and Nursery Rhymes) and our first ever Artist-in-Resident, Lauren O’Neal, in the main Nave space; co-produced the SqueezeBox Slam with the Somerville Arts Council in May; joined the Somerville artists advocacy group “Space Equals Work” and, together with the Washington Street Arts Center (WSAC), created the first ever Somerville Toy Camera Fest which opens the first of three exhibits August 10th at WSAC before moving to both Nave spaces in September.
I can’t say it enough. Thanks to everybody who came out to Flatbread. Your support makes it possible for us to do what we do. If you didn’t have a chance to make it for pizza but would still like to support your local art gallery, consider making a donation here. In case you didn’t know, everything we do is volunteer run. There are no paid staff members behind what happens. The Nave Gallery and Annex relies on a number of dedicated creative folks who I could not exist without, especially, but not limited to, Tori Costa, Ted Ollier and Jaja Kumpa.
Thank you again for your support, and I hope to see you at one of our events soon.
