Flux is defined as: “the flow of a physical property in space” (Wikipedia),“the rate of transfer of fluid, particles, or energy across a given surface” (Merriam-Webster), and“a substance applied to a surface to be joined” (FreeDictionary), among many other definitions.
Lauren O’Neal, the Nave Gallery’s first artist-in-residence, is using her residency as a laboratory—to test out ideas and materials that have been kicking around in sketchbooks and maquettes—and to experiment with repetition and absurdity. O’Neal often works with string, chairs and other common materials, sometimes transforming them, and at other times tweaking them just slightly so that they appear ordinary with a little something “off.”
During the course of the exhibition, O’Neal will continue to work in the gallery. Pieces may be reworked. New works may take root. Elements that are contingent, off-balance and strange may show up unexpectedly. No promises are made in terms of stability, reason, or understandability.
