The Nave Gallery Annex (Somerville, MA) invites artists to participate in the curated exhibition, Performing the Home.
Performing the Home will be a series of experiential, time-based artworks at the Nave Annex in Davis Square, Somerville, MA. Artworks, ranging from interactive installation to performance to social media engagement, will directly address activities, issues, and relationships in the home. In addition to the main theme of “performing the home”, sub-themes of technology, globalization and feminism are encouraged.
The exhibit is specific to the Nave Annex because it is a domestic space, a-house-turned-gallery. I would like to take it one step further making it a house-turned-gallery-turned-house. The gallery will be semi-staged as if it is a lived-in house with furniture and decor, but with a surreal edge. I want the space to feel recognizable but unsettling. Each room of the gallery will be a room in a typical house: bedroom, living room, kitchen or another common room depending on which performances are selected.
The idea of the home and the function of the home have shifted in the digital age. How have daily performances in the home changed since the introduction of the internet, smart phones, and social media? How has the home environment and home relationships changed as a result of technology? or globalization? Collaboration, experimentation, and interactivity are vital components to the exhibit.
We invite you to share your work and ideas with us.
All media variations of experiential art are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to: performance art, movement/dance, sound, interactive art, and time-based installation work. Artists are encouraged to use the gallery space as a house for performances. Consider performances and installations in the bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen or patio. The curator and artists will collaborate on the overall presentation and schedule of the exhibit. Questions regarding work and process can be submitted via email at performingthehome2016@gmail.com, and the curator will respond as quickly as possible.
GUIDELINES:
– There is a $15 submission fee, payable through Paypal. Paypal is available here. Please include “Perform Home” in the note field
– A maximum of three pieces may be entered for consideration
– Submissions will be accepted through July 10, 2016
– The Nave Gallery will retain a 30% commission for work sold
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK:
– Fill out artist and artwork info in this form
– Fill out one form per artwork being submitted
Form includes:
– Description of proposed work (no longer than 1 page)
– Description of time, space, and technical requirements for work (curator does not have budget for elaborate requirements, but is willing to help find resources to make it work)
– Brief artist statement
– Artist CV
– Link to artist website
– Artwork
– Along with form, sending video, photos or sound clips of work is highly encouraged
– Video should be submitted in the form of a link to YouTube or Vimeo and should not exceed 5 minutes in length.
– Audio should be submitted in the form of a link to Soundcloud or Bandcamp (or similar service) and should not exceed 5 minutes in length.
– Include links to video and sound in the description of proposed work section in the form described above.
– Images should also be submitted in the form of a link to the artist website or another website service. If this is not feasible, images can be submitted via email attachments as small jpegs no larger than 2 MB each.

The curator will contact accepted artists for further information involving logistics and possible collaboration with other accepted artists.

ABOUT THE CURATOR:
Christina Balch is an artist and interactive producer interested in the way people define themselves through imagery, especially through the use of mobile technology and self-documentation. Feminism and technology are common themes in her work. Christina’s work has been exhibited in the Boston and Los Angeles areas. She lives and works in Somerville, MA.
