What happens when art loses form?
When form becomes intangible?
What forms are left in the aftermath of an artwork? A sculpture? A painting?
Residual Form is an exploration of the art experience. As process becomes more and more a part of the artwork, how much of the artist’s hand do we need to see? How do we define our experience when we must redefine the art object?
Encompassed in this exhibition are objects that are remnants of process redefined as art two dimensional, three dimensional, intangible. Can the mold be as valuable as the casting? The film as valuable as the printed photograph? How do artists reimagine their process as fine art?
This may also include installations that have no ostensible form. Can light, sound,or movement replace an object? This is no place for the traditional painting on a wall or sculpture on a pedestal. In the contemporary experience of the art object, artists must consider the mark of their hand more seriously than ever before. Art becomes increasingly more biographical in nature. Is this the rising narcissism of the artist or the heightened awareness of contemporary audiences? Or something else entirely?
Residual Form is looking for artworks that question the traditional methods of art viewing through content, creation, or optical illusion. How have contemporary artists embraced or rejected the breakthroughs of artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollack, Bruce Nauman, or even more contemporary work from artists like James Turrell or the duo of Peter Fischli & David Weiss? The questions of the Process Art Movement are still being asked. Residual Form invites work that addresses the contemporary intersection of form and process.
