WHAT’S HAPPENING:
Join the Nave Gallery Annex in kicking off The 2016 Sketchbook Show with a poetry reading featuring Afaa M. Weaver and Gary Hawkins, an artist whose poems in progress appear in his sketchbooks in the show.
Afaa M. Weaver is the recipient of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award 2014 for The Government of Nature and the Phillis Wheatley Award for excellence in poetry at the 2015 Harlem Book Fair for City of Eternal Spring. He has published thirteen poetry collections. His poems draw on both his background as a factory worker and his explorations of eastern Asia, including the practice of martial arts. He is Alumnae Professor of English at Simmons College.
Gary Hawkins’s debut collection, Worker, investigates the worker, broadly imagined from the carpenter to the oracle. He teaches in the creative writing program and serves as associate dean at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, an innovative liberal arts college with integrated work and service programs. With his wife, the poet Landon Godfrey, he edits and produces Croquet, an occasional letterpress broadside delivered as a postcard.
