The Nave in Somerville, MA is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of local, regional and national contemporary art. Supported through a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, we are offering two stipends of $1500 each for applicants from the greater Boston area who have never worked as a curator before. Preference will be given to BIPOC, seniors and young artists and/or art lovers. Work of a collaborative, non-commercial nature is especially encouraged.
Exhibitions must take place in 2024.
2024 Guidelines for Group Exhibition Proposals
*Deadline: November 15, 2023
*Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis
– Proposals must be for group exhibitions (three or more artists)
– Proposals should be organized around a theme and/or process
– Proposals that include an open call for artists are encouraged with a $15 submission fee paid to the gallery
– Works in all mediums will be considered
– Curator(s) have responsibility for choosing artwork
– Curator(s) have primary responsibility for hanging the exhibition
– Curator(s) will be asked to help identify volunteer gallery sitters
– Curator(s) are encouraged to include a gallery talk separate from the opening reception
– Curator(s) are responsible for drafting the press release. The Nave will send it out to its media outlets
– Exhibitions are scheduled for 4-6 weeks
GALLERY SPACE:
The Nave Gallery in Teele Square is located in the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church. The exhibition space is approximately 1300 square feet. The ceilings are 10 feet tall. One wall is natural wood paneling and one wall has two windows allowing natural light. Work may be hung from the ceiling in select locations.
Prospective curators are strongly urged to visit the sites prior to submitting a proposal. First time independent curatorial proposals are more likely to be sited in the main Nave Gallery
LOGISTICS:
– Curator(s) are responsible for communication with artists
– Curator(s) must provide curator’s statement and 3-4 high res images for press at least four weeks in advance of the scheduled opening date
– The gallery takes a 30% commission on all sales
– Work exhibited does not have to be for sale
– Artists are responsible for the cost of shipping work to and from the gallery
– Local artists are encouraged to volunteer for gallery sitting to assist the curator(s)
THE NAVE WILL:
– Pay the curator a one time stipend of $1500
– Pay the cost of postcard invitation
– Distribute press through variety of media including its social media channels
– Provide limited insurance
– Assist with promoting the call for entry

HOW TO SUBMIT:
Submission materials should include:
– Curator(s) statement of concept
– 5-10 jpeg images that support the concept
– Image files should be no greater than 1.5 Megabytes
– Image files should be labeled: ARTIST LAST NAME_01.jpg, ARTIST LAST NAME_02.jpg, etc
– An image list that includes:
– Artist’s Name
– Image number
– Whether images are actual work to be shown or representative of what will be shown
– Medium
– Physical description
– Date work was created
Preferred method to submit video files is to provide a link to YouTube or Vimeo
All materials should be combined in one zipped folder and emailed to:
