WHAT’S HAPPENING:
Since 2011, the Somerville Arts Council has promoted a decentralized music festival in mid-May called PorchFest. This is not a festival per se, but rather a community event where Somervillians share their love of playing and listening to music. Think of Somerville Open Studios, which is for visual artists, but for music. Musicians and bands throughout Somerville will celebrate and utilize an underused public venue: The Porch.
The Annex will be participating in this year’s PorchFest hosting the rousing Dirty Water Brass Band (DWBB), a HONK! Festival favorite. DWBB, a street band based in Davis Square, plays an eclectic mix of jazz, R&B, New Orleans, & more, creating an oftentimes raucous but then on occasion a subtle sound that could be defined as music from the bayou and beyond. Locally, Dirty Water has invaded the outdoor stages of HONK!, Central Square, Harvard Square, and outlying neighborhoods, as well as indoor spaces such as the Lily Pad, Precinct, Cantab, Johnny D’s, to name a few. DWBB is Mary Curtin (sax), Peter Goransson (sax), Dave Lewin (trumpet), Tim Opperman (trombone), Jim Overly (sousaphone), Todd Page (trombone), Jamie Pierce (sax), Gary Smiley (trumpet), & Don Stevenson (drums).
