2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the bomb and the end of World War II. Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen revolves around the relationship between Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, two prominent physicists who worked on developing the bomb for opposing sides during the war.
In Copenhagen, the spirits of Bohr, Heisenberg, and Bohr’s wife Margrethe, meet after death to speculate on why Heisenberg visited Bohr in Copenhagen in 1941. Heisenberg was Bohr’s finest student and then colleague and dear friend. Whatever transpired in this infamous 1941 meeting damaged their friendship irrevocably. What did Heisenberg think could and should be done about atomic bombs? What did he want from Bohr? As they debate and reject Heisenberg’s possible intentions, the conversation addresses many powerful issues and emotions involving Nazi Germany, nuclear war, uncertainty, and moral irreconcilables.
