Hannah Verlin, Fate (2011), photography by Andy Pickering
August 15, 2014
October 2, 2014 – October 26, 2014
Nave Gallery Annex, 53 Chester St, Somerville, MA
The Nave Gallery Annex (Somerville, MA) invites artists to participate in the curated exhibition Bibliophilia.
Books mix together sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance. They are an interactive experience that fills up space and engages the body, a physical narrative that you move through over time.
The physical book is disappearing from our world, displaced by e-readers. Though e-readers offer convenience, they do not offer that same intimacy of physical connection. The reader interacts only with the text and not the object. You do not feel the journey as you weigh the pages read compared to pages unread. You are not taken back to that moment years ago, when you spilled coffee on the page or underlined a meaningful passage.
Bibliophilia will celebrate and explore the complex medium of books. The curator will select artworks that depict how this form can express diverse ideas.
– Submit handmade (or altered) books in any form, including:
– Books that are sculptural or interactive
– Artists’ journals
– Altered found objects
– If appropriate please include images showing the book presented in more than one state (open vs. shut)
– Note how the book should be displayed (shelf, pedestal, etc) and if you can provide these elements
– $15 entry fee payable through PayPal
– A maximum of 3 pieces may be entered for consideration
– Submissions will be accepted through August 15th, 2014
– The Nave Gallery will retain a 30% commission for work sold
– Artist is responsible for cost of shipping work to and from the gallery
