WHAT’S HAPPENING:
Concert to Feature World Premiere of Mark Harvey’s New Piece, Mo-Joe, Honoring Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone.
The legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world, continues its historic 41st season. The band will perform the world premier e of director Mark Harvey’s Mo-Joe in honor of Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone. Also on tap: Harvey’s 2014 composition Spaceways, celebrating the Sun Ra Centennial and Dreaming, featuring vocalist Grace Hughes. Rounding out the show will be music by Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, Gerry Mulligan and Django Reinhardt.
The June 28 show will be the grand finale of Joe’s Jazz and Blues Festival 2014. Established in 2009, the Somerville festival was the brainchild of Mayor Curtatone, a jazz enthusiast and well-known supporter of the arts.
