DATE & TIME:
Saturday, September 30; 2:00 pm-3:00 pm
LOCATION:
Nave Annex, 53 Chester Street, Somerville, MA
WHAT’S HAPPENING:
In partnership with The Nave Annex, Juventas New Music presents an afternoon concert with two exciting local contemporary music soloists: gayageum player Do Yeon Kim and Juventas’s own flautist Orlando Cela.
Orlando Cela is committed to engaging audiences with lively performances that open new worlds of experience. Known for his compelling performances using imaginative programming, Orlando has premiering over
100 works, both as a flutist and as a conductor. In concert, Mr. Cela regularly offers short lively introductions to selected works, providing audiences with entry points into unfamiliar works, so that listeners can easily connect the music with other life experience. As a flutist, Mr. Cela has performed at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian (Washington DC), the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston), and at the Center for New Music and Technologies at UC Berkeley. His credits abroad include concerts at the Zentrum Danziger (Berlin), the Espace des Femmes (Paris), and at the Musikverein (Vienna). As a collaborative artist, Mr. Cela has concertized with
flutist Paula Robison, tabla player Samir Chatterjee, harpsichordist John Gibbons, and with shen (mouth organ) virtuoso Hu Jianbing.
A dedicated music educator, Orlando is known for his dynamic workshops and lecture demonstrations. Popular and effective as a guest lecturer and clinician, he has presented sessions at the Charlotte New Music Festival, Tulane University, UC Berkeley, and Brandeis University, as well as at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, Dulwich College (Beijing), Shanghai Normal University, the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (Germany). Orlando has two masters degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he
studied flute performance and conducting with Paula Robison and Tamara Brooks, respectively.
DoYeon Kim combines the Korean traditional instrument Gayageum with Korean folk, Free Jazz, and other world music traditions to create a musical language all her own. The first-ever Gayageum student at the New England Conservatory, DoYeon is experienced in both traditional Korean music and modern works alike, and performs both in solo recital and premiering the works of living composers. DoYeon has played several of her own solo recitals in Korea and America. Her JaYu Quartet was selected as an honors ensemble in 2015-2016 by New England Conservatory, and performed alongside composer John Zorn in a concert of Zorn’s music at New York City’s The Stone, where DoYeon peforms frequently. Do Yeon was also invited to perform at the Museum of Fine Art’s Lunar
New Year celebrations in 2015 and 2017.
DoYeon received the Gold Prize in Gayageum sponsored by the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, one of the most prestigious awards in Korea. In addition to a number of other prizes, she was also awarded the Gold Prize in the Dong-A Ilbo Traditional Music Competition, and in 2008 was chosen by the Korean Department of Culture as one of the few Gayageum musicians in the Seoul Youth Delegation tour of Japan. DoYeon holds a certificate in music education from the New England Conservatory, and has also been invited as a guest lecturer on
Gayageum and Korean music at Tufts University, Emmanuel College, and Brandeis University. A graduate of the National Traditional Music High School, DoYeon received top honors upon her graduation from Seoul National University’s College of Music in 2014, and is pursuing graduate studies in the Contemporary Improvisation department at the New England Conservatory.
